As a writer, people have often come up to me to tell me, “I have a great idea for a book. You should write it!” My response is always the same: “No. You should.”
We all have a story in us. We all have some information that other people would like to know. We’ve all lived interesting lives. (And if you think your life has been mind-numbingly boring, that in itself might be interesting.)
To begin with, it may seem difficult to get our ideas, our stories, down. Not everyone has a great command of the English language. That shouldn’t stop you, and the more you write, the better you’ll be.
If you have an idea that you’ve always thought should “get out there”, you kind of owe it to the world to get it out there. If you’ve had something fascinating happen to you, other people love to hear about interesting moments in people’s lives. If you don’t have a complete command of the language, get it down, then find someone to help shape it into something more proper. Dictate your story or idea, then get someone to type that up for you.
Humans are story telling beasts. We have it wired into our DNA. We love telling them and we love hearing them. Will your story be brilliant? Probably not. Will it win a Pulitzer prize? Not many do. Will it be worthwhile? Almost certainly, yes.
So what do you know? What ideas have you had swimming around in your head for years? Even if only one thing interesting has ever happened to you (or around you, or to someone you know…) get it all down so you can share it with the world.
